(CNN) – Sen. John McCain has chosen Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to be his vice-presidential candidate on the Republican ticket for the White House in November, CNN has learned.
Palin, 44, is a first-term governor who unseated incumbent Gov. Frank Murkowski in the Republican primary in 2006 and went on to defeat former Gov. Tony Knowles, a Democrat, in the general election.
An advocate of drilling for oil in her state's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, she is little known outside of Alaska.--------------------------

The Republicans intend to loose this election. McCain would have done better with Romney and the repubs know it. Choosing Romney would have signified unity within the party, a sincere trust in tradition, and some inevitable policy changes, akin to when he reduced the $3 billion deficit in Massachusett to $1.2 billion. Although Palin is visually striking (runner up in the Ms. Alaska Pageant) and obviously young, it is still McCain's election to win or loose. This country has rarely valued the position of the vice-President.
However, I think that this demonstrates the Republican Party's true genius. In choosing Palin, the repubs are getting her prepared for when they intend to have her run against Mrs. Clinton, four years from now. In a race where there will be at least two women running for the same position, the nation will feel like either choice makes history and is therefore acceptable. In addition, the repubs are building on Mrs. Clinton's "18 million cracks" comment by offering a candidate who can, by definition, shatter the ceiling.
And let us consider the state of which she is govenor. The ratio of men to women in Alaska is by far the highest of any state of the United States of America. Many of those men are single. That she, a woman, won over Toney Knowles (Dem) is no small thing, especially since she was Lt. Govenor right after his term as Governor. It also allows McCain to quickly act on his off-shore drilling point, which will reduce gas prices more expediently than Obama.
I believe that this is the country's introduction to what will be a Republican dream ticket next election. We already know that Obama is going to have a hell of time fighting his way through this mess. He will plant the seeds and it is the Republicans intent to have Palin reap the benefits. I think that the repubs are setting up McCain for a fall. If that ticket looses, it will be because of McCain and not Palin.
